The beautiful Isobel of Aberlady is coveted by many men for the power of her prophetic visions. Isobel's father has kept her isolated at Aberlady Castle for this very reason. But when he is taken prisoner in battle, Isobel must rely on her own resources to protect her besieged castle and its people.
Just when all hope seems lost, James Lindsay, Scottish knight turned outlaw, scales the high castle walls to save her. Isobel obeys the counsel of her guards and escapes with James, certain he will deliver her safely to her betrothed, Sir Ralph Leslie.
But James has other plans, plans that go even further awry when the hardened warrior finds the lure of the gentle lady more than he can deny.

This is a wonderful book. I liked it for many reasons. The story didn't just happen in a few days times. The two main characters didn't fall in love at first glance and within two pages they were so deeply in love they would die for each other. The author took her time and told the story. She coupled it with truth of history and created a masterpiece of a here and now romance.
I was so pleased too with the love making scenes. She didn't get into graphic detail. We didn't have to hear how wet the heroine got or how large and ridged his member is. I find myself usually skimming over those parts (no pun intended) because we get it. They are loving each other. Enough said.
I can't tell you how many times I found myself so pleased with this find in finding this book.
The author also incorporated the sport of hawking. I had no idea about it and found it was a wonderful addition to the story.
It was not just about how she met him, they fell in love, got over strife and now live ever after. It was about life and what would and could have happened in those times.
I can't thank her enough for a wonderful read.... I would have paid 5.00 or more for it on my kindle. It's that good.

Laird of the Wind The Celtic Nights Series Book 4 edition by Susan King Romance eBooks Reviews
I found this book to be ill named. I really think it should have been called something like the "goshawk falconer". If you are interested in goshawks then you would love this book. It is full of information. I now know a female goshawk is bigger than a male. I now know they are classed as short winged. I now know a goshawk eyes turn from bronze to red when they are adult. I now know an adult has seven white stripes across the tail feathers. I now know you can dip the tail feathers in hot water to straighten them. I also know they throw a heck of a lot of tantrums, throwing themselves off the perch , hanging upside down and flapping their wings. This goshawk threw so many tantrums that it got to the stage I would have given up. I also found it unbelievable that anyone could walk around with a goshawk on their all day. I would have thought it would become more than the arm could take. I lost the plot of the story and remember about goshawks. The author has done considerable research into goshawks which I admire but less goshawk and more story line would have suited me better.
Every scene in this book is lyrical, lush, sensual and compelling. Every scene, not just the g-rated sex scenes, but every moment - from the fierce and bloody battles to the hawk training to the heroine's prophetic trances - every moment is so vivid it's almost like painfully bright sunlight. And it's so skillful; not an overwrought moment. Characters are wonderful, historical setting is riveting...it's just terrific.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was well researched and written. It caught my attention from the beginning and held my interest until the end. The description of falconry was particularly interesting to me, I have never heard an accounting written like this before. I would have given this book 5 stars except I found the ending a little too predictable. I will definitely read more books by this author.
What a joy to have discovered Susan King! This is my kind of novel - intelligent and interesting with three dimensional characters living in a challenging historical period. Yes, I like real history in my historical romances and this one delivered that as well as action, and an enchanting romance between Isobel and James. Ms. King's descriptions of their secluded aerie are hauntingly beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about falconry through their efforts to retrain an injured goshawk. Their love story, heroics and loyalty to each other and Scotland were memorable.
Don't let the cheesy cover fool you. Once again, Susan King combines legend, history, mysticism, and romance to create a magical story. Black Isobel is a famous prophetess who has little control over her visions; she recites them to her father and the priest who interpret and pronounce their contents, and then she promptly forgets what she has envisioned. Ironically, Isobel does not realize how cloistered her life has been until she is captured by James Lindsay. James's reputation has been ruined by one of Isobel's visions branding him a traitor to his cause. All he wanted was to trade her to her betrothed for his cousin a simple plan and a win-win situation. Unfortunately, nothing goes as he expects once he meets Isobel. He fully expects her to be an ugly old crone with an agenda. He is shocked to find a lovely authentic woman with a beautiful soul. The capture and training of a goshawk along the way serve as an interesting metaphor for human nature and the opposing needs of security and freedom and what it takes to achieve both.
